For those
who don’t remember what piki pikis are, they are motorbikes. After my first
vehicle trip into the villages it became apparent that:
a) vehicles are really really
expensive to use to go to the villages
b) you can’t get everywhere with a
four wheel drive vehicle (so piki pikis are needed)
So after
having meetings about my experiences on Wednesday and after doing more project
write up and planning, it became apparent that I would need to find a good piki
piki driver who I trusted and could speak English to take me to the villages
from now on for most of my work. Thankfully this ended up being an easy process
as one of the younger staff members had just bought a new piki piki and is
bilingual but to make sure I felt safe I spent most of the day driving around
with him through rough countryside to see how he could handle the motorbike and
long trips. All is well that ends well and in the end we decided we were a team
and that the next day we were ready to return to the distant villages to go to
Tegetero, because it had been impassable by car the day before.
