So to make
things go more smoothly and make more sense, I decided I will split up blog
posts according to events or days even if I post them all on the same day (I
think it will make some of my events easier to follow!)!
After the
first day of training in Dar es Salaam the two Zanzibar interns, Sabrina and
Lisa (who said I could use their names) and I headed on an adventure to find
somewhere to eat for dinner. Since we were all craving Indian food (and I was
not likely to eat Indian food again for a long time) we headed off with our
‘on-call’ taxi driver (they can be much safer then getting in a random taxi in
most countries) to find a restaurant. The first restaurant we were recommended
to go to was close to the hotel we were staying in but sadly it was not open!
So we were recommended to go to a second one which was quite an adventure...
While I was
in Botswana last year I had no problem driving around at all and actually drove
quite frequently, but you could not pay me enough to drive in Dar!! I have
NEVER seen such aggressive driving in my life (not even in Indonesia)! In order
to get anywhere you literally have to stick the front (or rear) end of your car
into the middle of traffic and hope that someone stops for you to turn,
otherwise you will never get into a lane! People also drive and stop soo close
to one another that I wouldn’t even be able to fit a half a ruler in between
their cars! While on our one hour long drive out to the restaurant (due to rush
hour traffic) we almost got into two bigger accidents (and by almost I mean we
either barely skidded by one car or the brakes thankfully worked instantly) and
I can’t even count the number of times we almost rear-ended or were almost rear
ended by someone! Haha! So for the first time in my life, I was happy to be a
passenger in someone else’s car!
Finally we
arrived to a beautifully decorated place with a fake waterfall outside the
building in the rich part of town which was our Indian restaurant. I must
admit, that being on an intern budget and seeing how beautiful the place was
all three of us instantly thought that our meal was going to cost us our whole
weeks food budget! Haha! Once we arrived inside we were greeted by the friendliest
staff, all beautifully dressed in Indian fabrics. The inside was even more
beautiful than the outside and for a moment I felt as though I could have been
in India with how perfectly decorated the restaurant was. Needless to say (or
long story short, as I like to say after spending much too long telling an
unimportant story, haha), we had found a little gem in the vast crazy city of
Dar, that served not only the best Indian food I have ever eaten but at really
reasonable prices! I hope I can at least explain it to the intern from YEN
going to Dar, I am sure she would love the restaurant!
